Free Japanese-to-English Machine Translating and Glossaries

There are several web sites that provide free translation-related services.

The Excite Japanese-language search engine provides free Japanese to English machine translating. Though the translations are likely to sound like gibberish, the site can be useful in determining the general subject matter of a document. Their URL is: http://www.excite.co.jp/world/text/.

English sites that provide dictionary look-ups in Japanese-English dictionaries are:

Jim Breen

www.csse.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/jwb/wwwjdic?1KG.

Solon
www.solon.org/cgi-bin/j-e/nocolor/S=18/fg=r/sjis/dict.

Eijiro
www.alc.co.jp/.

Nova
wwwd.nova.co.jp/webdic/webdic.html.

There is a list server for professional Japanese translators called Honyaku. It has searchable archives which sometimes has the answers for difficult terms. http://www.monjunet.ne.jp/PT/honyaku/.
